Mexico will do very well at the World Cup, promises Gerardo Martino

GIRONA – Optimistic, excited, Mexico national team coach Gerardo Martino made an accurate assessment of the condition of Raúl Jiménez and the moment he sees his team making their debut against Poland at the World Cup in Qatar after the defeat this Wednesday night against Sweden 2-1.

“Even if I lose the game, I’m very happy with what’s been done in Girona these days,” Martino replied. “I’m going with the feeling that we’ll do very well (in the World Cup). I go into the dressing room and see the players who are very involved in football issues and problems to be solved. All of this gives me hope and gives me the certainty that we will do very well,” he said.

“I liked that (Mexico) beat the rival and should have won the match. And what set pieces, we will find Poland. These are teams that go into space ahead, and if you make a mistake, you pay for it. Raúl Jiménez was able to last 45 minutes without any physical problems,” he said.

“I can’t judge Raúl after this game. Our expectations were high and luckily it ended well. I don’t judge the number nine by the goals they score, but by what they bring to the team in the generation of the game.”

He clarifies that the changes he made were not desperate measures, but that they were all fully considered in the moments when they were planned. “They didn’t go because we lost.”

On the other hand, between realism and resignation, Gerardo Martino knows that people’s skepticism will only change with direct results at the World Cup.

“When they asked me a year ago after the finals they lost to the United States, unless you win all the games it will be difficult to recover when things get that far. Otherwise you can’t. Neither what I say, nor what the players try, the only way is to solve it with results at the World Cup,” he added.

The Mexico national team will travel to Doha this Thursday to make the final adjustments at the special monastery that has been prepared in the city of Sumaysima, 33 kilometers from central Qatar.
